The Nursing program at Allegany College offers a two-year career
program that qualifies a student to apply for an Associate in Science
degree and a one-year career program that qualifies a student to
apply for a Certificate in Practical Nursing. Both programs are designed
to enable students to seek employment at the program's completion.
The two-year Nursing Curriculum, approved by the Maryland State Board
of Examiners of nurses, prepares graduates to assume beginning staff positions
for patient care in general hospitals and similar health facilities and
to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure
as registered nurses. This option also prepares students to transfer to
a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing at area universities.
The Practical Nurse Certificate Program, also approved by the Maryland
State Board of Examiners of Nurses, prepares the graduate to assume responsibilities
of patient care in hospitals and similar facilities under the direction
of a registered nurse. Graduates of the program receive a certificate and
are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN)
for licensure as Licensed Practical Nurses.
Graduates of both programs at Allegany College have a 98% passing rate
on the National Council Licensing Exams.
Both program curriculums at Allegany College have been designed as a statewide
program by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. This means that for
qualified students all, or a portion of, out-of-county tuition differential
will be refunded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
Admissions into the Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing program
are selective and on a competitive basis. Two classes a year are admitted
into the Daytime Nursing program (Fall and Spring Semesters) and one class
a year into the Practical Nursing program (Fall Semester). The criteria
is the same for both programs.
Due to the increased demand for our nursing program, not everyone who applies
can be accepted. However, you can still take courses at the college and
be enrolled in the Pre-Nursing curriculum. Your advisor will be happy to
help you choose courses to meet your individual needs.
Many opportunities are open to you with a career in nursing. Beginning
staff positions are available in general hospitals, extended care facilities,
clinics, health agencies, industries and doctor offices. The economic opportunities
are substantial with competitive starting salaries. With the proper educational
and professional background, nurses can advance to various positions in
nursing service and nursing education.
Nursing is a career open to men and women with varius aims, interests and
capabilities.
Starting salary for an LPN is usually $17,700 and for an RN $26,000.
There are many scholarships and various forms of financial aid available to students at Allegany College to help with expenses. The following scholarships are available to students enrolled in the Nursing programs only:
