Allegany College of Maryland Foundations

Community support has been a key factor in the success Allegany College of Maryland has enjoyed in providing high quality education and related services for over three decades.

Considerable credit for this success is due to the efforts of the three Foundations that work for the betterment of their communities by garnering support for Allegany College of Maryland, based in Cumberland, and its branch campuses in Bedford and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania.

All three organizations -- the Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, the Bedford County Regional Education Foundation and the Somerset County Campus Foundation for Allegany College of Maryland -- are non-profit entities incorporated under state and federal law.

Their purpose is to encourage the growth, progress and general welfare of the college, especially through receipt of private tax-deductible gifts, bequests and donations, and to account for, manage and help appreciate those monies or properties.

Each Foundation is composed of representatives of business, education, the professions and the general community who have demonstrated positive leadership and who have an expressed interest and desire in using their influence on behalf of the college.

The three Foundations concentrate their efforts in areas of greatest need. The main-campus oriented Allegany College of Maryland Foundation focuses on scholarships for deserving students. At the much more recently begun Pennsylvania branch campuses, the Foundations have primarily been concerned with physical plant -- facilities, equipment and furnishings.

Following are the individuals closely involved with the three Foundations as well as an address and phone number for each organization:

Alumni

Allegany College of Maryland regards its growing body of alumni as an important group of friends who know the true value of the institution because of what it meant to them as students and has meant to them since.

The Allegany College of Maryland Alumni Association exists to help former students remain involved with their alma mater.

The organization publishes a newsletter that keeps graduates and former students informed of news, events and activities at the college. The Alumni Association also offers certain benefits to members as well as activities for current students.

The Alumni Association, which is led by officers elected at an annual meeting of members, is open to any person who has taken an Allegany College of Maryland credit or continuing education course.

Scholarships

Scholarships help deserving students continue their education beyond high school, develop to their maximum potential and contribute to society to their greatest degree.

Fortunately, this need is recognized by a growing number of community-minded persons and groups who sponsor student scholarships at Allegany College of Maryland's three campuses.

They recognize that everyone benefits when students have greater access to education, especially the economic wellbeing of a community through a more highly educated and skilled workforce.

This interest in education translates to several hundred scholarships that are awarded each year to students on the basis of criteria determined by the benefactor. These may include:

  • Enrollment in a specific curriculum
  • Attendance at a given campus
  • Residency in a certain geographical area
  • Academic merit
  • Financial need

Students should consult the Allegany College of Maryland Foundation scholarships booklet, available at each campus, to determine their eligibility. E-mail questions may be addressed to: brendaw@ac.cc.md.us
