ACOM's School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts

 

The Culinaire Cafe, located in the downtown Cumberland Gateway Center, is part of Allegany College of Maryland's School of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts. It is a unique opportunity for students to operate and manage a business while earning college credit.

The Cafe is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Students are involved in all facets of the business, including menu development, marketing, purchasing, cost controls, and scheduling. These are skills desired by employers in one of the world's largest industries... THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY.

INDUSTRY FACTS

  • The industry employs over 11 million people and generate a payroll in excess of $317 billion.
  • Jobs are expected to grow at a faster rate than the overall company. Between now and 2008.

    • Food and beverage management jobs are expected to grow by 31%
    • Hotel and lodging management jobs are expected to grow by 28%
    • Recreation/amusement management jobs are expected to grow by 40%
  • It's an industry known for promoting from within and for having a large number of young managers. Hospilality is a fast-paced career, and talented employees advance quickly - some within a matter of months.

PROGRAM OFFERINGS INCLUDE

Hotel and Restaurant Management (A.A.S Degree)
This program is designed for the person who enjoys the "front of the house" or customer service facet of a hospitality business. Graduates will qualify for employment in restaurants, hotels, resorts, school food service, health care dietary departments, and other businesses that provide lodging and/or food service.

Courses include:

  • Front Office Management
  • Quantity Food Production
  • Menu Planning
  • Dining Room Management
  • Hotel/Motel Marketing

Culinary Arts (A.A.S. Degree)
This degree program was created for the person who enjoys the "back of the house" or production facet of a hospitality business. Graduates will qualify for employment as cooks, sous chefs, executive chefs, culinary educators, and kitchen managers.

Courses include:

  • Food Preparation I and II
  • Baking I and II
  • International Cuisines
  • Garde Manger

 

 

 

Travel/Tourism (Certificate)
This one-year certificate was designed to prepare a person to be employed as a travel agent, tour guide, tour operator, or tourist promotion representative.

Courses include:

  • Ticketing and Reservations
  • Principles of Travel/Tourism
  • Travel Destinations

All of the above are designated as statewide programs by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. This means that for qualified students all, or a portion of, out-of county tuition differential will be refunded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
